National Forest Directory
Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest -
The Apache and Sitgreaves National
Forests, administered as one national
forest, encompass over two million acres
of magnificent mountain country in
east-central Arizona. The Sitgreaves
National Forest was named for Captain
Lorenzo Sitgreaves, a government
topographical engineer who conducted the
first scientific expedition across Arizona
in the early 1850’s...
Coconino National Forest - The Coconino
National Forest is one of the most diverse
National Forests in the country with
landscapes ranging from the famous Red
Rocks of Sedona to Ponderosa Pine Forests,
to alpine tundra. Explore mountains and
canyons, fish forest lakes and wade in
lazy creeks and streams.
Coronado National Forest - The
Coronado National Forest covers 1,780,000
acres of southeastern Arizona and
southwestern New Mexico. Elevations range
from 3000 feet to 10,720 feet in twelve
widely scattered mountain ranges or "sky
islands" that rise dramatically from the
desert floor, supporting plant communities
as biologically diverse as those
encountered on a trip from Mexico to
Canada. Views are spectacular from these
mountains, and visitors may experience all
four seasons during a single day's
journey, wandering through the desert
among giant saguaro cactus and colorful
wildflowers in the morning, enjoying lunch
beside a mountain stream, and playing in
the snow later in the afternoon.
Kaibab National Forest - The Kaibab
(pronounced 'kI-"bab) is one of six
National Forests in Arizona operating
under the care of the USDA Forest Service
and here to serve our visitors at work and
play! Whether it's a visit to Sycamore
Canyon, Kendrick Mountain or Kanab Creek,
visitors will not be disappointed with the
natural pleasures that await in the Kaibab
National Forest. If you are a citizen of
the United States, you are one of its
proud owners. If you are from foreign
lands, you are an honored guest. In either
case, we hope your visit with us will be
an enjoyable and rewarding experience...
Prescott National Forest - Comprised
of about 1.25 million acres, the Prescott
borders three other National Forests in
Arizona: Kaibab, Coconino, and Tonto.
Roughly half of the forest lies west of
the city of Prescott, Arizona, in the
Juniper, Santa Maria, Sierra Prieta, and
Bradshaw Mountains. The other half of the
Forest lies east of Prescott and takes in
the Black Hills, Mingus Mountain, Black
Mesa, and the headwaters of the Verde
River.
Tonto National Forest - The Tonto
National Forest, Arizona, embraces almost
3 million acres of rugged and
spectacularly beautiful country, ranging
from Saguaro cactus-studded desert to
pine-forested mountains beneath the
Mogollon Rim. This variety in vegetation
and range in altitude (from 1,300 to 7,900
feet) offers outstanding recreational
opportunities throughout the year, whether
it's lake beaches or cool pine forest. As
the fifth largest forest in the United
States, the Tonto National Forest is one
of the most-visited “urban” forests in the
U.S. (approximately 5.8 million visitors
annually). Its boundaries are Phoenix to
the south, the Mogollon Rim to the north
and the San Carlos and Fort Apache Indian
reservations to the east.

About the State of
Arizona
Arizona is a U.S.
state located in the Southwestern United States.
It is best known for its desert landscape, which
includes cacti. Arizona is also known for its
exceptionally hot summers and mild winters. Less
well known is the pine-covered high country in
the north-central portion of the state, which
contrasts with the lower deserts of the state.
Arizona is one of the Four Corners states. It
borders New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, California,
touches Colorado, and has a 389-mile (626 km)
international border with the states of Sonora
and Baja California Norte in Mexico. Aside from
the Grand Canyon, many other National Forests,
Parks, Monuments, and Indian reservations are
located in the state. Arizona was the 48th state
admitted into the U.S. (1912), and the last of
the contiguous states admitted. (source)
